FlipNot Brushkit Deluxe! for Krita
A downloadable brushkit
FlipNot Deluxe! is a resource bundle for Krita filled with brushes that match Flipnote Studio 3D for 3DS.
Flipnote Studio 3D’s canvas is 320x240px, and Splatoon 2’s is 320x120px.
Contents
- 27 Brushes
- 13 standard brushes
- 8 pattern brushes
- 6 spray brushes
- 8 patterns
- 1 color palette
Quick Overview!
- Contact me if you'd like to use this kit for free in exchange for attribution!
- Overlapping paint mode support for patterns, so you can paint the background and foreground at the same time!
- Really easy to install: after you've downloaded the bundle, open Krita, click Settings -> Manage Resource Libraries, then click the Import button and browse to flip1dx.bundle.
- Sprays! Wow!
- Has all of Flipnote's brushes, even the weird ones!
- Pixel grid alignment is built-in so you always get the right shape when clicking!
- Square brushes scale correctly even at big sizes!
- The Flipnote studio palette is built-in!
- Patterns keep working even after you adjust the settings!
Standard Brushes
Every brush is based on the brushes from Flipnote Studio, as closely as I could replicate them. Both of the 1x1 pixel brushes are almost perfect 1x1 lines but will need touch-ups to be pixel-perfect until this Krita feature request is completed.
- 4 exact-shape brushes: Pixel, 2x2 Square, 3x3 Square, and 4x4 Circle
- Needle: a single-pixel brush for zoomed-in touch-ups that doesn't snap to the pixel grid
- 4 scalable shape brushes: circle, square, and partially pressure-sensitive versions of each for painting an any size you like
- Slime: A unique brush that thickens slightly when cornering.
- Paintbrush: A fully pressure-sensitive circle brush.
- Two negative-space brushes that draw around the outside of a line. Unlike on 3DS, the background color cannot be drawn here because Krita's engine can't do that.
Pattern Brushes
- All patterns align with each other if possible.
- All pattern brushes support Normal Paint (combine patterns) or Overlapping Paint (see gif below) or using a gradient mapping. To switch between modes, change the Gradient in the top-left toolbar to Foreground to Transparent for Normal Paint or Foreground to Background for Overlapping paint.
- All pattern brushes scale with pen pressure. You can disable this by temporarily disabling pen pressure in the brush settings, by globally disabling pen pressure using the "Use Pen Pressure" button available in the "Configure Toolbars" settings menu, or by adding a "flipnot" pattern to one of the non-pressure-sensitive brushes.
- You can change the "Pattern Offset" brush settings for each brush to create different overlapping patterns when drawing patterns over each other.
Spray Brushes
Large and small versions of three spray patterns roughly equivalent to the spray brushes in Flipnote Studio.
- Spraypaint in two sizes, no sensitivity
- Lines in two sizes, no sensitivity
- Dense, speed-and-angle-sensitive lines in two sizes
Patterns
- The same patterns from the brushes are available as patterns tagged "flipnot."
- You can apply a changeable pattern to an already-drawn layer by placing the layer inside a new group, using a Pattern Overlay layer style on the layer (or adding a pattern fill layer above it in inherit-alpha mode), then placing a Gradient Map filter mask above the layer.
Color Palette
I made the color palette from a GIF I exported from Flipnote Studio.
Tips/Troubleshooting
- Texture brushes overlap differently if the mirror brush tool is aligned on a 0.5 pixel or a 0.0 pixel. 0.5 overlaps perfectly; 0.0 is offset by 1 pixel.
- Texture brushes can be slow at very large sizes; you can speed them up by turning off the overlap-paint mode if you don't need it. Open the brush settings and change Texture > Pattern > Options > Texturing Mode from "Gradient Map" to "Subtract".

Hello! I really love your brushes, but am having issues with rendering. Normally, the image looks like this
Although when you zoom in, the fur disappears entirely. Even in my gallery on my phone, the thumbnail image has this exact same problem, as shown below. How do I fix this issue?
Like, it appears normal on some things, but Discord and Gallery app it doesn’t
I really love this brushkit! Ive been looking for brushes similar to these to make simple animations, however i have issues regarding rendering the animation at the recommended settings for the brushes (320x240p). If you can tell me the settings or software you used for rendering please let me know :(
lovely lovely !!! we've been using the original pack of brushes for a while now , it is nice to see there is a deluxe version with the other weird brushes from flipnote 3D :] thank you very very much for making these
as for feedback . . . after some usage , i find that it may be nice if the pixels on the patterned brushes' icons were enlarged to make it easier to tell the pattern at a glance ... other than that , though , i'm having a good time with these so far :]
Thanks for letting me know! I'll work on an update to make the previews easier to see. In the meantime, you can scale the icon size up larger by using the slider under the hamburger bar next to the Tag dropdown in the Brush Presets docker.
