Flipnot 2

Stand-out Features!

  • Includes all 20+ Flipnote Studio brushes---even the weird ones!
  • You can paint patterns in one or two colors at the same time!
  • You'll get the right shape when clicking thanks to built-in pixel grid alignment!
  • Square brushes scale correctly even at big sizes!
  • All eight patterns align with each other!
  • Flipnote Studio's 8-color palette is built-in!
  • Super-easy to install. Just a few clicks! See the bottom of this page.

What's included?

Four Exact-Shape "Aligned" Brushes

These brushes are all exact pixel shapes. Use them for consistent lineart or stamps. The cursor shows exactly where you'll draw, since they're aligned to Krita's pixel grid. None are pressure-sensitive.

  1. Pixel (will need touch-ups to be pixel-perfect until this Krita feature request is completed)
  2. 2x2 Square
  3. 3x3 Square
  4. 4x4 Circle

Nine Regular Brushes

These are dynamic tools for painting with pixels.  When you're zoomed way in, the cursor won't show exactly the pixels you'll draw--use the Aligned brushes for that. No-alignment is better for these brushes since the snapping awkwardly changes the way the lines look.

  1. Needle: Unaligned 1x1 brush  (will need touch-ups to be pixel-perfect until this Krita feature request is completed)
  2. Circle
  3. Pressure-Sensitive Circle (minor pressure sensitivity)
  4. Square
  5. Pressure-Sensitive Square (minor pressure sensitivity)
  6. Slime: Thick corners, just like the one in Flipnote Studio.
  7. Paintbrush: Fully pressure-sensitive circle brush.
  8. Traintracks: Odd brush that's empty in the middle. Krita cannot draw the background color here, unlike on 3DS.
  9. Candy: Larger version of traintracks.

Eight Pattern Brushes

Flipnot DX has eight pattern brushes, just like Flipnote Studio. Each brush is fully pressure-sensitive. Check out the Advanced Pattern Tips section for how to use them!

Six Spray Brushes

Use spray brushes to draw textures and effects.

  1. Speckles: a classic spray-can tool.
  2. Sand: larger, denser version of speckles.
  3. Kanji: lots of tiny, messy lines
  4. Sticks: larger version of kanji
  5. Airbrush: changes size with speed and drawing angle, but not pressure.
  6. Spraypaint: larger version of airbrush.

Advanced Pattern Tips

Draw Overlapping Patterns to Create More Textures

To draw a pattern like normal with a transparent background, click the Gradient in the top-left toolbar and choose Foreground to Transparent. This is a good way to create more complicated shading or combine some colors to create the illusion of a color outside the palette.

Draw Background and Foreground at the Same Time

To draw a pattern with two colors at once, click the Gradient in the top-left toolbar and choose Foreground to Background. This is handy for blending two hard lines or quickly combining colors.

Use Patterns to Create a Shadow

You can apply a changeable pattern to an already-drawn layer by placing the layer inside a new group, using a Pattern Overlay layer style on the layer (or adding a pattern fill layer above it in inherit-alpha mode), then placing a Gradient Map filter mask above the layer.

Try a Pattern on Another Brush

All the Flipnot patterns are tagged "flipnot" in the pattern browser. You can change the texture on any other brush to one of these patterns to draw with that pattern on that brush. Make sure the texturing mode is set to "Gradient Map" to replicate the color blending effect, or "Subtract" if you don't want that.

Draw Reflected Patterns with the Mirror Tool

Texture brushes overlap differently if the mirror brush tool is aligned on a 0.5 pixel or a 0.0 pixel. 0.5 overlaps perfectly; 0.0 is offset by 1 pixel.

Fix Slow Texture Brushes

If you're drawing patterns at huge sizes, drawing might get slow for you. If this bothers you, open the brush settings and change Texture > Pattern > Options > Texturing Mode from "Gradient Map" to "Subtract". You can't combine background and colors this way.

Thanks for Checking out Flipnot DX!

Hello! I really love your brushes, but am having issues with rendering. Normally, the image looks like this

Although when you zoom in, the fur disappears entirely. Even in my gallery on my phone, the thumbnail image has this exact same problem, as shown below. How do I fix this issue?

Like, it appears normal on some things, but Discord and Gallery app it doesn’t

Hi Casualfanboy, thanks for trying Flipnot!

I have to say I'm stumped too... I've never seen image compression completely remove a color. When an image gets resized, on-off patterns like those in manga or pixel art like yours can cause weird effects (see also "ringing"). It looks like the image resizer on your phone (is it an iphone?) loses that color.

I tried looking at it on Discord on my computer and phone (Windows and Android) and it looks fine.

I really love this brushkit! Ive been looking for brushes similar to these to make simple animations, however i have issues regarding rendering the animation at the recommended settings for the brushes (320x240p). If you can tell me the settings or software you used for rendering please let me know :(

Hi SopaWah, thanks for using Flipnot!

I used Krita to make this animation. Check out Krita's instructions here. Under File->Render Animation... there's an option in the Video menu to export as an animated GIF.

lovely lovely !!! we've been using the original pack of brushes for a while now , it is nice to see there is a deluxe version with the other weird brushes from flipnote 3D :] thank you very very much for making these

as for feedback . . . after some usage , i find that it may be nice if the pixels on the patterned brushes' icons were enlarged to make it easier to tell the pattern at a glance ... other than that , though , i'm having a good time with these so far :]

(+1)

Thanks for letting me know! I'll work on an update to make the previews easier to see. In the meantime, you can scale the icon size up larger by using the slider under the hamburger bar next to the Tag dropdown in the Brush Presets docker.

In v2, released today, the icons are now much bigger!
